The Warriors board announced yesterday that Colin Ingram will replace Davy Jacobs as the captain of the franchise in all formats for 2014-15.

In a press release the board said Ingram, who has played 32 ODIs and 9 T20Is for the Proteas, ‘had captained the team on a couple of occasions in the absence of incumbent Davy Jacobs and has shown that he possesses all the attributes to lead the team into a new era. Ingram has remained true to his roots and stayed with the Warriors after his national contract was not renewed last season.’

Chairman of the board John Ross-Smith said that they had believed the hard-working Ingram would naturally lead by example and assist a young Warriors team to once again bring back silverware to the Eastern Cape.

The board also thanked wicketkeeper Davy Jacobs for his massive contribution as captain over the past six years, and said he still had a vital role to play within the team on and off the field of play. After appointing Jacobs as captain in 2008, it took him just two seasons to repay the faith when he guided his team to triumph in the Pro20 and the 40-over competition in the summer of 2010-11, the first trophies ever won by the Eastern Cape franchise.

Ingram played the last of his games for the Proteas against Pakistan in Dubai last November, but found himself out of favour after a string of sub-par performances. His form wasn’t helped by being in and out of the side, but with his national contract not being renewed earlier this year, it is clear he is no longer a part of the Proteas plans for the immediate future.

However, being elevated to the captaincy will allow Ingram to take on more responsibility with the team, which will raise his profile in the domestic game and, if he finds form and success with the Warriors this season, could see him come back into the reckoning for the Proteas.
