On Tuesday we bounced past the 1,000,000 view mark on our YouTube channel … so Khalid Mohidin lays out his top five YouTube videos from our archives over the past 21 months.

1. Kyle Verreynne Uncovered 

This was the turning point in my journalism career thus far. I developed an idea to start a long-format video piece that would explore the life of cricketers in the domestic and international scene. It’s a mini-documentary series that aims to uncover the journey of various cricketers in the country, hence the name ‘Uncovered’. My first episode was an opportunity I will  be forever grateful for. I chatted to Cobras wicketkeeper batsman Kyle Verreynne. He helped ease the nerves for an idea that was close to my heart, and I had a lot of fun hearing about his journey, which we shared with you.

2. Aiden Markram Uncovered 

This episode was a true honour. My first Protea and hopefully not the last. I’ve always kept a close eye on his career ever since I watched him play in the U19 World Cup as a fan. When I became a journalist just under three years after the World Cup, I did some research to find out where Markram was at that point and phoned him up for my first online feature. After Markram’s fantastic start to his career, it was fitting to find out his story about how he became a Protea and about the dramatic start to his Test career. I was humbled by his humility and how approachable he was.

3. Zubayr Hamza Uncovered 

In August 2016, in my first month as an intern, I wrote my first Future Star and it was about Zubayr Hamza. Fast forward two years later, and Hamza was selected in the Proteas squad and became the 100th capped Protea in Test cricket after isolation. It was intriguing to hear his story and how it started, right up to the day he got the call that he would be in the squad to face Pakistan.

4. Dale Steyn 

The Mzansi Super League was an amazing tournament that opened up the door, not only for the players, but for journalists too. It gave us the opportunity to chat to players we would not normally have easy access to. I had the privilege of chatting to Dale Steyn for the first time, and what an experience it was. His way of thinking and humbleness was incredible, but my second interview with him really allowed me to see what an honest and selfless cricketer he really is.

5. Anri Grobbelaar 

This was one of the most fascinating interviews I have done. I interviewed 15-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Anri Grobbelaar from Western Province and SA U19. She explained her story and how difficult it was to start her career. She became the first-ever woman to feature in the magazine as a Future Star, and I was amazed by how mature and successful she was at such a young age already. Also, her bubbly personality made her very easy and fun to talk to.
