• Harris smashes record 42-ball ton

    Grace Harris’ 42-ball ton for the Brisbane Heat was the fastest Women’s Big Bash League century and the second-fastest in women’s T20 cricket.

    Harris finished on 101 not out to take Heat to a 10-wicket win over Melbourne Stars on Wednesday at the Gabba. Her team needed just 10.5 overs to chase down a target of 133.

    Only Deandra Dottin, who made a hundred off 38 balls in the 2010 T20 World Cup, has made a faster century.

    With the scores level and in her nineties, Harris was set to take the one run needed for the win, but Beth Mooney waved her back. Harris then duly brought up the milestone and sealed victory with a huge smash down the ground for her sixth six of the innings.

    Her knock included 13 fours and the half-century came off 23 balls, meaning she needed just 19 more for the second 50.

    Dropped on 92, she made the most of it to bring up her second century in the tournament.

    ‘I’ve been working on a back-of-the-length baseball type slog, and so when it sits up and comes into my hip, I can just have a swing and clear the fence, because I’m strong enough,’ said Harris after her innings.

    The previous record for a WBBL ton was Ash Gardner’s 47-ball effort in the last edition.
