Proteas Women skipper Dane van Niekerk was bitterly disappointed with her side’s performance with the bat against world champs the West Indies Women as they lost by 31 runs in Gros Islet.
‘Very disappointed,’ said Van Niekerk after the match. ‘And what can we say with a batting display like that?’
Once again, the Proteas bowlers performed like champions, reducing the West Indies Women to 29-4 and holding them to 107-7 off their 20 overs.
‘I can’t fault the bowlers and the batters aren’t doing any justice to the bowlers. We spoke about the full face of the bat, but we’re not doing it at the moment. Credit to them, they deserved the win,’ said a visibly distraught Van Niekerk.
‘We knew there wasn’t enough runs on the board and we just wanted to bowl in good areas,’ said West skipper and Player of the Match Stafanie Taylor. ‘I said to the girls we just have to go out there and bowl our hearts out and dive around.’
Taylor also paid tribute to the crowd that served as a 12th player in the thrilling Windies win.
‘Fantastic to see this crowd. CPL was great, surprised to see this crowd here,’ said Taylor.
Van Niekerk added her agreement, admitting, ‘We didn’t play against just the XI, we played against the whole crowd.’
