Deandra Dottin took a sensational 5-5 for the West Indies as they crushed Bangladesh by 60 runs in their opening Women’s World T20 match, despite posting a light target for the Bangladesh Women’s team to chase in Providence.
The West Indies found themselves 18-3 at the end of the fourth over, and 36-4 in the ninth thanks to excellent bowling by Bangladesh. The best partnership they could muster was 37 for the sixth wicket between West Indies skipper Stafanie Taylor (29 off 44 balls, two fours) and Kycia Knight (32 off 24, two fours, one six).
The West Indies struggled to 106-8 off their 20 overs, with Bangladesh’s Rumana Ahmed taking 2-16 (econ 4.00) and Jahanara Alam 3-23 (econ 5.75).
In response, the best partnership Bangladesh could cobble together was 10 runs for the fourth wicket off 14 balls between Fargana Hoque and Nigar Sultana as they stumbled their way to 46 all out off 14.4 overs.
Dottin was the destroyer-in-chief, knocking over five Bangladesh batters for just five runs to pick up the Player of the Match award, while Shakera Selman took 2-12.
‘I think a lot of them might be having a heart attack at the halfway stage. Not the best of batting performances. But it’s good that we came out in the second part and we finished the game,’ said Taylor after the match. ‘I think our shot selection wasn’t good and the Bangladesh team bowled excellently. Going out there, I tried not to think about myself, tried to get a competitive total on the board.
‘At a point, I was talking to my partner saying we need to get 110, 115, try to milk it and hopefully we can go big in the end overs. There was no doubt in my bowling attack. I’m pretty confident in that area. My bowlers could come out and defend any runs.
‘We want to improve our batting,’ added Taylor. ‘I know what we can do. We can hit boundaries at any time but just at the top, we need to rotate the strike a bit more.’
‘I like to bowl first. We bowled well. Today the batsmen weren’t good, that’s why we lost it,’ Salma Khatun says. ‘With a target of 106, we should have chased it. The batting was not good. We need to improve it. If we had batted better, we could have won the match.’
‘No matter what total we put up on the board, we are strong enough to defend it [with the ball]. The low total that we had, I knew that I had to bowl wicket-to-wicket,’ said Dottin. ‘That’s the good thing with being an all-rounder: if you don’t pick up with the bat, you pick up with the ball.’
