Former Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel has heralded the arrival of Titans opening batsman Tony de Zorzi on cricket’s global stage.

De Zorzi struck an impressive century against Afghanistan’s Boost Defenders during the inaugural Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy last week.

The entertaining 106 not out was laden with switch hits and reverse sweeps – and spanned a mere 57 deliveries.

The talented left-hander later struck a solid 34 in the final, but could not prevent defeat to Pakistan’s Lahore Qalandars.

‘No-one out there knew about Tony’s ability before that week. We obviously knew what he was capable of, but that is exactly what these types of events can do for a player,’ said Morkel, who captained the Titans in Abu Dhabi.

While the Titans boasted the services of several first-choice stars, New Zealand’s Auckland Aces, Australia’s Hobart Hurricanes and others admittedly fielded under-strength XIs.

‘It was a wonderful first tournament, and going forward it might be even better if all the franchises had their international players available,’ added Morkel.

The Titans drew with the Dolphins in the opening fixture of the 4-Day Franchise Series prior to travelling to the United Arab Emirates. They have since returned home for a key first-class match against the Warriors, which will start at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.

‘Regardless of which format we were playing back home, this was a wonderful opportunity for us. We had an awesome experience, and would love to be involved again,’ concluded Morkel.
