Former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis has learnt a lot from a burgeoning career as a coach – arguably more than almost two decades of international cricket.

Kallis, whose Proteas career spanned from 1995 to 2014, was appointed head coach of the Indian Premier League’s Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015.

‘I’ve got two more years of the IPL, I really enjoy and it’s nice giving back and seeing the game in a different point of view,’ Kallis said on SuperSport’s Dan Nicholl Show earlier this week.

‘The interesting part is I would play the game slightly differently now that I’ve coached. You see things differently and I would’ve done things differently.

‘It’s amazing how much you learn from your own game when you’re coaching someone else.’

The Knight Riders won the IPL in 2012 and 2014 – and enjoyed the services of Kallis as a player prior the ongoing coaching role.

‘It’s unbelievable. We are really fortunate we are in a great franchise like the Kolkata Knight Riders – they look after me unbelievably well,’ he added.

‘The owners give me free reign to run the side how I want. Hopefully we’ll grow from strength to strength. Hopefully I can win as a coach as well.’

The veteran Kallis also played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL – and the Sydney Thunder and Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel in Australia’s Big Bash League and the Caribbean Premier League, respectively.
