Big-hitting Sussex proved too much for Somerset as they marched into the Vitality Blast final against Worcestershire.
Luke Wright scored a belligerent 92 off 53 balls (S/R 173.58) to power Sussex to 202-8 off their 20 overs in the second Vitality Blast semi-final on finals day at Edgbaston.
Former England international Wright’s innings would have been his eighth T20 century and included five fours and seven sixes as he got the Sussex innings off to an explosive start.
Wright shared an innings-defining partnership of 120 for the fourth wicket with former South African international all-rounder David Wiese, who muscled the Somerset bowling for 52 runs off 29 balls (five fours, two sixes, S/R 179.31) before losing his wicket with six balls of the innings in hand.
Jerome Taylor bowled superbly given the punishment meted out to his teammates, recording figures of 4-0-20-4 (econ 5.00).
In response, the Somerset innings struggled to get going before an 84-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Tom Abell (48 off 29, S/R 165.51) and Corey Anderson (48 off 32, S/R 150.00).
Somerset’s challenge dissolved when Anderson was caught hitting out off the last ball of the 18th over, leaving Somerset way behind the curve on 153-6.
Sussex’s heroes with the ball were Jofra Archer (3-32, econ 8.00) and Chris Jordan (2-17, econ 4.25) as they swept Somerset aside to win by 35 runs and set up an enticing final against Worcestershire this evening.
