Kyle Abbott outshone Dale Steyn as the Hampshire duo teamed up in a dominating six-wicket victory against Somerset in the County Championship.
Former Proteas speedster Abbott led the way in Somerset’s first innings by taking 5-31. He was aided by current Proteas quick Steyn, who grabbed 3-37 as Somerset were skittled for 106 in their first innings.
Sam Northeast top-scored with 53 for Hampshire as they replied with 148 runs in their first innings.
Steyn and Abbott continued their dominance in Somerset’s second innings. Abbott outshone Steyn once again, this time taking 6-40, while Steyn finished with figures of 4-34 as the opposition were toppled for 116.
Hampshire ended on 75-4 as they sealed a comfortable victory.
This is a brilliant boost for Steyn, who struggled for wickets during the Proteas’ tour of Sri Lanka. Having equalled Shaun Pollock’s record of 421 wickets, Steyn will hope he can continue his fine county form into the Test series against Pakistan starting in December.
