    CSA has launched an interactive, tablet-based education tool to develop SA’s youth.

    Cricket South Africa launched their School in the Box initiative at the Nelson Mandela Sports Complex in Hammanskraal as part of the Standard Bank RPC/Hubs Programme on 23 August. The project will be rolled out as a pilot ahead of the 2018-19 season, functioning at three Hubs in Langa, Dobsonville and Hammanskraal.

    School in the Box is an interactive, tablet-based education tool that is designed by exceptional teachers across the country, using the very best informative content available. Learners log in and select the subject, section and lesson in which they need assistance or reinforcement.

    This tool is aimed at providing an added value to the existing RPC/Hubs Programme, which culminates in the annual Standard Bank RPC U17 Week featuring the very best RPCs from around the country.

    The objective of the programme is to improve the quality and the number of cricket matches played within the previously disadvantaged areas and, in doing so, will create and nurture the love of cricket among the black communities. It is aimed at helping to develop quality black African cricketers who will contribute positively towards the CSA pipeline and create more parity in the number of matches played in comparison to that of the former model C and private schools.

    CSA has adopted a three-prong approach in developing the country’s future Proteas, focusing on cricket, education and nutrition.

    ‘This forms a very important part of how Cricket South Africa proceeds towards creating well-rounded cricketers, not only on the field but off it too,’ commented Corrie van Zyl, CSA general manager of cricket.

    ‘After an introspection of our programme, we looked at ways of how we could improve it to help the players outside the realms of cricket. We found that this tool will assist us in producing individuals who will be better equipped to take on life outside the game.

    ‘Education plays an integral role in one’s future dreams and goals, and initiatives like School in a Box go a long way in helping our young boys and girls build the required foundation towards achieving those dreams, regardless of their background,’ Van Zyl concluded.

    The talented players from these RPC/Hubs will get an opportunity to receive additional lessons in English, maths, science and geography or any other subjects that they are struggling with at school.
