The Delhi Daredevils crashed out of the playoff places when they were beaten by seven wickets, with one ball remaining, by the Sunrisers in Hyderabad.
They remain on six points from 10 matches, while the Sunrisers enhanced their standing to 14 points from nine, taking top spot on the log due to their run-rate.
The Sunrisers’ chase was well measured, too, for while their top score was 45, by opener Alex Hales, the leading batsmen all made solid contributions. It was the Sunrisers’ highest successful chase this season.
Yusuf Pathan sealed it with an incredible 27 off 12 balls, with two fours and two sixes.
The Daredevils had been in cruise control after overcoming the shock run-out of Glenn Maxwell, the victim of a deflection at the non-striker’s end. Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer put on 86 and at 95-1 after 10 overs, a big score was on the cards.
But Rashid Khan put the brakes on that when he induced a top edge from Shaw’s sweep, ending an innings of 65 off 36 balls with six fours and three sixes.
Only 35 runs were scored in the next five overs, when Iyer fell to Siddarth Kaul for 44 off 36.
Rashid took two more wickets in the 17th over as the Daredevils struggled to score just 43 off the last five overs. Given the start they had, they fell desperately short.
