Hardus Viljoen stood out with the bat, scoring a half-century for Derbyshire on an adequate day one for the Saffas in round two of the County Championship.
The Lions speedster, who played one Test for the Proteas, scored 60 not out for Derbyshire as they were bowled out for 265. He hit five fours and four sixes to reach his seventh first-class half-century.
Viljoen also took one scalp as Middlesex ended on 45-3. Knights and Proteas speedster Duanne Olivier also picked up a scalp.
Elsewhere the performances varied with regard to significance.
Dean Elgar scored at a frighteningly slow strike rate of 38.59. He scored 44 off 114 balls as Surrey posted 211 all out in their first innings against Hampshire. In the same match, Kyle Abbott ended the day with figures of 1-61 for Hants.
Marchant de Lange finished with figures of 5-62 for Glamorgan against Gloucestershire to restrict them to 236. Glamorgan ended on 26-0.
Aiden Markram scored a double duck in his first game for Durham. His first came when they were skittled out for 91 in their first innings. Titans batsman Heino Kuhn’s 54 helped Kent score 169 in their first innings and take a lead of 78. Markram went for another duck in his second innings as Durham ended on 13-1.
Northamptonshire were skittled for 147 as Cobras batsman Richard Levi top scored with 41. Warwickshire reached 113-3 by the close of play.
Stiaan van Zyl, who played 12 Tests for the Proteas, scored 44 for Sussex as they ended the day on 254-7.
Warriors spinner Simon Harmer took 4-44 against Lancashire to reduce them to 141-8 after Essex were skittled for 150.
