Hilton College and Grey High School emerged as the teams to beat at the end of day one of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge national finals at Tukkies on Friday. THEO GURRUN reports.
Representing the Dolphins and the Warriors respectively, they were the only teams to win both games on the opening day and, in the process, they knocked off two of the pre-tournament favourites in the Knights’ St Andrew’s School and King Edward VII School of the Lions.
In the morning matches, Grey beat St Alban’s College, while Hilton were too strong for Rondebosch Boys’, winning by eight wickets.
Both KES and St Andrew’s were impressive in their first outings. KES posted the biggest total of the day, 198-7 against the Coastal focus school, Graeme College, with Ambrin Snyders (62) making the biggest score of the day.
St Andrew’s SA U19 player Gerald Coetzee shone with bat and ball as they beat Prestige College in their first match.
In the afternoon. KES once again set the highest first innings total, 174-7 — with their captain, Callum Broodryk contributing 53 — and it seemed as if that would be enough, but Grey paced their chase well and got the winning runs off the third-last ball of the game.
Tristan Stubbs was Grey’s big-hitter, finishing on an unbeaten 51 off 42 balls, while Cody Posthumus smashed 29 off just 10 balls, effectively taking the game away from the Joburg school.
All the teams have one more pool match on Saturday morning and one cross pool game in the afternoon before the positional playoffs take place on Sunday morning.
Grey and Hilton play the two focus schools on Saturday morning and must be the favourites to make it all the way to the final.
