    Proteas bowler Dale Steyn feels the intensity shown in the current series between South Africa and Australia is good for the game.

    Steyn, who looks set to miss the third Test in Cape Town, said competitions like the Indian Premier League and Big Bash League led to opposing cricketers becoming familiar with one other, which takes away the competitive edge.

    The four-match Test series between the Proteas and Australians has been full of talking points so far, from David Warner’s scuffle in the tunnel with Quinton de Kock in Durban to a fired-up Kagiso Rabada showing a lot of emotion in Port Elizabeth.

    ‘I think it’s about time we had a series like this. Cricket went through this dull phase. I think a lot of the guys go to the IPL, the Big Bash or the Caribbean Premier League and they join forces in one team and you become mates with the guys,’ Steyn said in a video that was posted on Twitter by Sias du Plessis.

    ‘I found that when I was running and bowling to guys like [David] Warner, or these other fantastic players like [Virat] Kohli, I’d become really good friends with them, so it took that competitive edge away from me a little bit as a fast bowler. I think you need that to succeed.

    ‘There has been a bit of heat around this series, and I think it’s really great. [They’re] probably overstepping a little bit with one or two issues with bans. But I think it’s good for watching. We’ve watched two bowlers take 10-wicket hauls. We’ve watched AB [de Villiers] come out and perform well with the bat.

    ‘It’s been a great series so far and we’re only halfway, so I’m looking forward to the next two.’
