De Villiers was brilliant for South Africa in the first innings, and Australia would have known that if they wanted to snuff out any chance of a South African fightback, then they needed to keep his time in the middle short.

De Villiers was run out for nought, having faced just one ball, at the non-striker’s end as the Proteas wilted under the pressure, and the top order collapsed.
Aiden Markram was able to offer some resistance, but who knows how the day would have panned out had De Villiers been there with him for longer than he was?
