The Lions were left with a mountain to climb after the Cape Cobras put on a commanding total of 574-8 declared in the first innings of their Sunfoil Series game in Paarl on Friday.
The Cobras began day two on 355-4, with Stiaan van Zyl well placed on 114.
While wickets fell regularly around Van Zyl, he continued where he left off for the home side, and would eventually fall to Omphile Ramela for a well played 228.
The home side would eventually declare on a massive 574-8, leaving the Lions with a mountain to climb.
With two wickets each, Beuran Hendricks, Nono Pongolo, and Ramela were the pick of the Lions bowlers.
Things didn’t start well for the Johannesburgers, who lost opener Dominic Hendricks early for just six runs, and Ramela soon after for just nine.
However, the Cobras’ charges was slowed down when Rassie van der Dussen joined Stephen Cook at the crease.
The two put on 152 for the third wicket.
Discarded Proteas spinner Dane Piedt was the standout bowler for the Cobras as he picked up the wicket of Ramela, and finished the day with figures of 1-53 from his 15 overs.
The Cobras will be looking to take complete control of the game on day three, and condemn the Lions to a third defeat.
