The West Indies were 147-2 in response to South Africa’s 417-8 declared when bad light stopped play on day three. With Kraigg Brathwaite and Marlon Samuels well set, the visitors look to be on course for the score of 218. This will ensure that they avoid the follow-on, and thus force South Africa to bat again.

A lot of time has already been lost in this Test due to bad weather, and with more rain predicted for days four and five, the odds are against either team obtaining a result.

South Africa would have hoped to dismiss the West Indies cheaply this morning. Some quick runs in the second session and perhaps in the hour after tea would have inflated the hosts’ lead. Ideally, the Proteas would have a second crack at the West Indies before the close of play on day four.

The incessant rain has hampered those plans. Three hours of play were lost on day four, and play only resumed at 13:00.

The first session is scheduled to finish at 15:40. The second and final session should finish at 18:00, although if the weather and light allows, play will continue until 18:30.
