Aiden Markram insists spin isn’t a problem for the Proteas, despite India’s spinners taking eight wickets in their nine-wicket victory at Centurion on Sunday.

Appalling cricket from the Proteas saw them post the lowest total at Centurion – 118 all out in 32.2 overs – a run shy of Zimbabwe’s 119 in November 2009.

Just like the first ODI, it was spin that tore through South Africa, with Yuzvendra Chahal taking 5-22 and Kuldeep Yadav 3-20.

This is an obvious issue for the South African side, but their stand-in captain said there isn’t much to change in their preparation.

‘They have two quality bowlers. I don’t think we played them particularly well and that was our downfall. You are never going to come across a bad bowling attack and you will never come against a bad batting line-up in international cricket.

‘It’s just one of those things. I don’t think we played spin very well. It’s obviously something we need to work on but it is not a massive danger for us.

‘There’s nothing drastic that has to change, the plans are in place and we just need to keep working on it to execute it. It’s each batsman for themselves and we need to take responsibility.’

There was much talk about game plans to face spin and Markram touched on his personal approach.

‘For me it is to try to take it quite deep, see through the innings and let my attacking batsmen bat around me. Obviously, I didn’t do that. I don’t have a real plan, I just try to keep it as low-risk as possible.

‘Once we build partnerships, we try to identify a bowler to put pressure on. I think we should just keep playing low-risk.’
