A carefree century from captain Raynard van Tonder set South Africa U19 on their way to a 169-run win over Kenya in the U19 World Cup.
Having elected to bat, South Africa ran up a massive 341-7, to which the Kenyans could only muster 172-7 in reply, at Lincoln, New Zealand
South Africa lost an early wicket in Matthew Breetzke (7) with 10 runs on the board, but Van Tonder, who smashed 143 off 121 balls, with 14 fours and five sixes, and Jiveshen Pillay (62 off 67) settled in to put on 125 in 19 overs for the second wicket.
Hermann Rolfes contributed 28 to a stand of 63 with Van Tonder, and while the middle order fell away a bit, the innings was given a boost by an unbroken partnership of 65 between Jade de Klerk (28 off 23) and Gerald Coetzee (36 from 14, 2×4, 3×6).
The South African were deprived of a second warm-up match due to rain last week, and Van Tonder was able to spread the bowling load, using seven in all. Kenan Smith and Akhona Mnyaka ended with two wickets apiece, but no bowler went for more than 4.12 an over as Kenya was wrapped up.
They were reeling at 98-6 when Jasraj Kundi (41) and Ankit Hirani (35) delayed the inevitable with a stand of 52.
South Africa will face West Indies in their next group match, on Wednesday (start 03.00, Tuesday, SA time).
