Hardik Pandya’s momentum-shifting knock of 93 on day two at Newlands is our Play of the Day.
India scored just 48 runs in the first session on day two. Shortly after lunch, they lost a couple of wickets and were in deep trouble at 91-6.
The Proteas had the opportunity to dismiss Pandya on 15 and claim a further wicket. Unfortunately for the hosts, Dean Elgar put the chance down at gully.
DAY TWO REPORT: India rise to Proteas’ challenge
That dropped catch proved costly. Pandya shifted gear thereafter, taking the fight to the South Africa fast bowlers in seam-friendly conditions.
The India all-rounder fell seven runs short of what would have been a fine century. Nevertheless, Pandya’s counterattacking heroics ensured that the tourists posted a relatively competitive total.
Pandya also made an impact with the ball late in the day. Aiden Markram and Elgar looked to be on course for a substantial opening stand before Pandya was introduced.
Those two wickets – and of course, his earlier batting contribution of 93 – have provided India with some hope of a turnaround.
