The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola week has reached its end and SACricketmag.com attended the announcement of the SA Schools side.
It was no surprise that the South Africa U19 players who participated in the Coke Week would flow through the SA Schools side, but there were some shock selections and omitted players in the side.
One SA U19 star who did not make it was Thando Ntini after the self-proclaimed batting all-rounder had a sub-par tournament playing three games, scoring 26 runs and only bowled 13 overs taking two scalps.
It was confirmed by SA U19 head coach, Lawerence Mahatlane, that provinces were given instructions on how to manage the U19 World Cup squad members, and Ntini was one of the players who had to be monitored.
Akhona Mnyaka was another player who was restricted from bowling too many overs, but the left-arm seamer still managed to make the SA Schools side, taking five wickets in his 20 overs.
Wandile Makwetu was named captain, while Jade De Klerk and Jason Niemand’s consistency through the week earned them call-ups.
Joshua Richards and Jacob Miltz batted well at the top of the order for Gauteng, which helped them remain unbeaten in the tournament.
A surprise inclusion in the SA Schools side was Boland and Paarl Boys’ High School’s speedster, Achille Cloete. The 16-year-old impressed selectors with his 40 overs bowled, taking 12 wickets and best figures of 3-11, his raw pace earning him a cap.
Curtis Campher, who was awarded the best all-rounder and wicket-taker award, was rewarded with an SA Schools cap for his 14 wickets and 94 runs scored.
The sides will face each other in a T20 clash on Friday, starting at 9:30.
