The Proteas take on England in the series-decider at Old Trafford, and we take a look at the stats ahead of the fourth and final Test starting on Friday.

More recently, in South Africa’s last game at Old Trafford in 1998, the clash ended in a draw, and the Proteas need to avoid a repeat of this result to prevent a series defeat.
The stats suggest that the team who wins the toss should bat first, with toss-winners at Old Trafford choosing to bat on 69 occasions, winning 27 times, losing 15 times and drawing 27 times.
The teams that have won the toss have chosen to field on eight occasions, and seven of those matches have ended in a draw, with one result ending in a victory for the team who lost the toss.
South Africa recorded the sixth-highest total on the ground when they scored 552-5d in their first innings against England in the 1998 draw.
The match saw Gary Kirsten hit the highest score by a South African on the ground, 210, and this remains the fifth-highest score. Jacques Kallis and Kirsten also set the highest second-wicket partnership of 238 runs at the ground.
Joe Root holds the third-highest score at Old Trafford, hitting 254 against Pakistan in 2016 to record a 330-run victory for the hosts. The 1964 Ashes series saw Bob Simpson smash 311 and Ken Barrington hit 256, which remains the two highest scores on the ground.
Alastair Cook is currently the sixth-highest scorer at Old Trafford and has 629 runs in seven matches played in Manchester.
None of the current players in the Proteas squad have played a Test at Old Trafford and will look to make their mark when the final Test kicks off on Friday, as the Proteas look to avoid losing a series in England for the first time since 1998.
