Herschelle Gibbs says that the Proteas should appoint an Australian coach. 

The Proteas will announce the appointment of a new coach after incumbent mentor Russell Domingo’s contract expires at the conclusion of the ongoing Test series against England.

Domingo’s future is not set in stone, as CSA have accepted applications for the job with an announcement expected in August.

Gibbs weighed in on the coaching debate, saying an Australian would be the ideal successor to Domingo and that he is a proponent of the approach taken by coaches from Down Under.

‘I like their approach to the game and the fact that they don’t put up with nonsense,’ Gibbs told Netwerk24.

The former Proteas opener says that the appointment of an Australian would bring new ideas, and that foreign input is necessary for future success.

‘I’d like to see a new approach. Something new and fresh won’t do any harm. I think that can only be achieved through outside input.’

Gibbs feels that the Proteas current setup is too laissez faire, with players having too much sway in the team’s decision-making.

‘That is a bunch of nonsense. The coach needs to be in control and for that reason, I believe an Australian coach – who won’t tolerate this “buddy-buddy” attitude’ – could work.’

Gibbs played 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20Is for the Proteas.
