• Kumble resigns as India coach

    Anil Kumble has resigned as the head coach of India just days after his side lost the final of the Champions Trophy to Pakistan.

    Kumble’s departure ends weeks of speculation surrounding the future of the former India leg-spinner. Reports of a rift between Kumble and his players had emerged during the Champions Trophy. The players were reported as saying they did not like the regimented nature of Kumble’s coaching, preferring a more relaxed approach to practice.

    ‘We wish to place on record our sincere appreciation for the immense contribution by Anil Kumble to the team, which enabled India to attain the No 1 Test position. Indian cricket needs his continued contribution in various capacities and wishes him all the best in his future endeavour,’ the BCCI said in a statement on its website.

    The national cricket board also confirmed Kumble’s decision on twitter.

    Until a permanent replacement for Kumble is found, Dr. MV Sridhar, GM Cricket Operations, is to head up team management during the team’s upcoming tour of West Indies.

    Sanjay Bangar, who is the batting coach, and  R Sridhar, who is the fielding coach, will remain in their roles with the team.

    India won eight out of ten series played across all formats under Kumble’s tenure.
