Pakistan have handed out a one-year ban, plus a $1 000 fine, to fast bowler Mohammad Irfan for failing to report approaches by bookmakers.

The 34-year old pleaded guilty, following an anti-corruption investigation focused on spot-fixing in the Pakistan Super League.

Internationals Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, who both play for Islamabad United alongside Irfan, have been provisionally suspended, while left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar (Quetta Gladiators) and opening batsman Shazaib Hassan (Karachi Kings) were questioned by the PCB’s anti-corruption unit.

Irfan says that he failed to speak up sooner due to his mental instability following the death of his parents.

‘I accept my mistake,’ he told a press conference at the Pakistan Cricket Board’s headquarters in Lahore.

‘I was asked to carry out fixes, but I did not commit any such crime. My mistake was not reporting these offers.

‘I confess and say sorry to the fans,’ he added.

His suspension will be reduced to six months if he attends lectures regarding the importance of anti-corruption laws.

The seven-foot-one-inch paceman played four Tests and 20 T20Is, but has experienced his most success in ODIs where he’s played 60 matches, taking 83 wickets at an average of 30.71.
