As part of our eight-team preview ahead of this weekend’s Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge, we take a look at Glenwood’s chances.
History in the tournament
This is the first time that Glenwood has made the Coca-Cola T20 Schools national finals. In previous years they have managed to qualify for the KwaZulu-Natal coastal finals, but they have never progressed further.
Road to the National Finals
In the KwaZulu-Natal coastal final Glenwood took on Clifton College. They battled on a tough pitch, and only scored 96-8 thanks to 40 from Thamsanqa Kumalo. However, due to some fantastic bowling from Jaden Hendrickse 2-14 and Daelen Fynn 3-22, they were reduced to 88-7.
They then took on St Charles in the franchise final. Once again they batted first on a difficult batting track, and made 117-9 thanks to 47 from Kumalo. St Charles could only score 109-7, with Jaden Hendrikse taking 3-20.
Potential Heroes
Kumalo represented KwaZulu-Natal coastal in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket week and did well in the tournament. He top-scored in the KZN coastal final with 40, and in the Dolphins final with 47.
Daelen Fynn leads the team and has done very well in the tournament. In the KZN coastal final he took 3-22, and in the Dolphins final he did not take any wickets, but was very economical with figures of 0-12 in four overs.
Prospects for the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge National Finals
Glenwood is one of South Africa’s top sporting schools and they push their kids towards excellence in sport. Glenwood will always be a team to beat.
Glenwood has had a couple of close matches where they had to defend small totals and managed to win the games. This preparation could be exactly what they need to win the tournament.
‘Our strength is in our bowling attack, Daelyn Fynn and Jaden Hendrickse have both bowled extremely well. If Thamsanqa and the rest of the batting line-up can give us a total to defend, I back my team to defend it,’ says Glenwood coach Jarryd Chetty.
