Matthew Breetzke and Jarryd Lookwhy put on a 155-run opening stand as the Warriors Cubs thumped Zimbabwe by 151 on day three of the CSA Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch on Friday.
Breetzke hit 79 runs from 104 deliveries while Lookwhy scored 70 off 105 to give their side a firm foundation to post their 256-6 in their 50 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Jimmy Sholto-Douglas and Jason Raubenheimer chipped in with a respective 34 and 20 runs as Zimbabwe’s Wesley Madhevere was once again the pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets for 34.
It was a team effort by the Warriors bowling attack that saw them bundle the visitors out for just 105 in 38.3 overs. Jason Niemand (2-14), Sholto-Douglas (2-15), Jade de Klerk (2-15) and Siphamandla Krweqe (2-20) gave their side a remarkable win in the end.
Elsewhere, the Knights pulled off a 24-run victory over the SA under-17 Invitational XI in a tight match at Tassies Oval. The Knights were limited to 167 in 48 overs after electing to bat first. Opener, Dilivio Ridgaard and Raynard van Tonder were the pick of the batsmen, hitting 66 and 42 runs respectively. The U17s’ Daniel Moriarty and Keenan Smith did the most damage with the ball, taking 3-17 and 2-29 respectively.
In the end, it was the Knights who had the edge with the ball in hand. While no one returned extraordinary bowling figures, the concerted effort of the attack saw them restrict the U17s to 143 with a little over four overs to spare. Themba Maupa took 2-18 while the rest returned a stick each, not allowing the batmen to go past Bonga Makhakha and Jean du Plessis’ scores of 23.
In the remaining matches, the Titans continued their winning ways after beating the Cape Cobras by an emphatic 65 runs, while the Dolphins suffered a four-wicket defeat at the hands of an undefeated Lions outfit.
