Quinton de Kock has to fire on day two at St George’s Park if the Proteas are to reach their target of 350.
South Africa lost four wickets in the afternoon session and finished day one with a score of 267-6. Afterwards, JP Duminy told reporters that with De Kock (25 not out) and Vernon Philander (6 not out) at the crease, a first innings total of 350 was still within reach.
Sri Lanka did well to pressure South Africa into mistakes in the periods after lunch and tea on day one. Suranga Lakmal will be searching for a fifth wicket on day two. It would mark his first five-for in Test cricket.
While warm weather is expected in Port Elizabeth for much of today, there may be a few showers later in the afternoon.
SA 267-6 – Duminy 63, Cook 59, Lakmal 4-62, Herath 2-48
