Faf du Plessis completed what he set out to achieve by skippering the side to their third-consecutive away Test series victory against Australia.

Speaking to reporters in Adelaide, Du Plessis was happy with what the Proteas achieved.

‘Mission successful’ he told reporters in Adelaide.

‘The last four days wasn’t planned but Australia fought back nicely. We came here to win the series, which we did in Hobart. It was an incredible series to win it 2-1 and to do it three times in a row is a huge effort.’

Coach Russell Domingo confirmed that AB de Villiers would return as skipper for the home series against Sri Lanka if he recovered from his elbow injury, but heaped praise on Du Plessis as his temporary replacement.

‘He’s been outstanding,’ said Domingo.

‘The team supported him throughout and just the hundred that he got in this Test match, shows the person that he is and the character he has.’

Asked how he would remember the series amongst all the ball-tampering allegations, Du Plessis gave a positive response.

‘I will remember it for winning the series. That’s what we came here to do,’ he said.

‘There was a little bit of huff and puff over the last few days but to overcome what happened and score that hundred is something I will remember forever.’

South Africa begin their home series against Sri Lanka on 26 December.
