Dolphins paceman Robbie Frylinck took 14 Lions wickets for 62 runs to become the most prolific bowler in a South African first-class match.
In an absurd contest at Potchefstroom, where 20 wickets fell in six and a half sessions of play, Frylinck took 8-30 in 13 overs to dismiss the Lions for 110 in their first innings, and followed that up with 6-32 off 16 overs as the Lions fell 77 runs short of their target of 277.
His medium-paced accuracy has put both Kagiso Rabada and Dale Steyn in the shade. Rabada last year took 14-105 for the Lions against the Dolphins, which eclipsed the seven-year record of Dale Steyn, who took 14-110 for Gauteng.
Only last week, Dolphins spinner Keshav Maharaj took 13-137, including 12 in one day, against the Warriors to take third place on the list of best bowling in the series.
It was a heavy blow for the Lions, on their ‘home’ pitch of Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, after starting the Sunfoil Series with a crushing win over the Cobras.
They too had a bowling hero in the young frame of schoolboy Wiaan Mulder, who took 7-25 as the Lions fought back on day two, knocking the Dolphins over for 83 in their second innings. The Dolphins, though, had the cushion of the only innings of note, 253 on day one, to which the Lions were able to muster just 110 in reply.
Reeling at 126-5 at the close of day two, the last five wickets were able to accumulate just 23 runs as Frylinck and Mthokozisi Shezi brioke their resistance and their spirit. They were dismissed for 149.
The Dolphins now have two wins out of two to take an early lead in the first-class marathon, having beaten the Warriors with ease last time out.
