The Proteas have fallen to seventh in the latest ICC Test rankings, with India crowned the new world No 1.

Sri Lanka’s 3-0 whitewash of Australia has caused quite a stir in the latest rankings. Not only have Australia lost their No 1 spot, but it means the Proteas have moved down a further spot, with Sri Lanka being rewarded for their excellent display against the Baggy Greens.

There shouldn’t be too much read into South Africa’s new position, as they haven’t played a Test match for eight months. With 15 Tests played within a year, they will have plenty of opportunities to work their way back up. The fact that Russell Domingo’s charges were No 1 in the world before the completion of the England series at the beginning of the year, however, symbolises a concerning downfall, and only serves to put more pressure on the coach and the players.

Australia’s recent struggles has allowed India to climb back to the top, but they will only hold onto that position if they beat West Indies in the fourth Test, with India currently 2-0 up. Should they fail to do so, Pakistan will be the new No 1 side in the world after their valiant displays in England which saw them win the fourth Test to draw the series 2-2. It will be a huge achievement for a side that haven’t played a Test at home for seven years.
