South Africa A continue to struggle on day three as Australia A start taking control in Townsville on Monday.
Day three of the second four-day match commenced with the tourists first conceding a 98-run first innings lead, before reaching stumps on 181-1 at the Tony Ireland Stadium.
Resuming the day on 181-1, the hosts lost Kurtis Patterson early thanks to the excellent Andile Phehlukwayo. The opener added just six more to his overnight 86, before he was dismissed for 92.
There was more joy for the South Africans shortly after the 200 was raised when Jake Lehmann was run out by Dane Piedt for 12. An 84-run fourth wicket stand between Peter Handscomb and Marcus Stoinis, who hit a century in the series-opening win last week, followed.
Skipper Handscomb completed his eighth first-class ton, before he eventually fell to pick of the bowlers, Phehlukwayo for 137 (244 balls, 20 fours). Stoinis made 22 as the Australians then lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out in 127.5 overs.
Apart from Phehlukwayo (3-70), who grabbed 3-70 in 23 overs, Piedt picked up 3-99, while there were one each for Wayne Parnell (1-82), Duanne Olivier (1-71) and Hardus Viljoen (1-61).
South Africa then lost captain Stephen Cook for a duck early in their second innings as they closed 80 runs behind.
