Faf du Plessis’ St Kitts and Nevis Patriots lost their final group game to finish last in this year’s CPL.
On an individual level, there were no stand-out performances from the South Africans in the CPL’s final group-stage action on Sunday night, but we will see more of Hashim Amla and David Miller, as their respective sides made it through to the playoffs.
St Kitts skipper Du Plessis was hoping to leave the Caribbean on a high having already been knocked out of the tournament, but, just like last year, the side finished at the bottom of the pile with the eight-wicket defeat to the Knight Riders in a repeat result from the night before. Du Plessis registered a duck to finish with 179 runs from his 10 innings. He was one of Dwayne Bravo’s four victims on the night as they posted 137-6. Amla only contributed six in the successful chase, which saw Denesh Ramdin (52*) and Brendon McCullum (43*) play lead roles in getting the target with three overs to spare.
In the later game in Florida, the St Lucia Zouks were out for a fifth win in six matches, and their impressive charge continued as they beat the Jamaica Tallawahs by 17 runs. David Miller’s services weren’t required thanks to yet another huge stand by Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles. Their last five partnerships have yielded scores of 88, 11, 60, 89 and 104. In the 11-run partnership, Charles went on to score 94. The side put together 194-3, before restricting the Tallawhs to 177-6.
The first playoff match now sees the top two sides (Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Jamaica Tallawahs) face off on Wednesday to see who goes straight through to the final. In what is essentially a quarter-final, the following day it’s St Lucia Zouks vs Trinbago Knight Riders to see who faces the loser of the first playoff match.
