The University Sports South Africa XI claimed their first win of the CSA Triangular Series when they beat South Africa Emerging by 42 runs in Pretoria on Thursday.
A handful of thirties by Zubayr Hamza (32), Thomas Kaber (31) and Delano Potgieter (31), as well as Janneman Malan’s 24 saw USSA post 201 in 48.4 overs.
SA Emerging’s Jason Smith continued his good form as an all-rounder, leading the wicket-taking tally with 4-21 and then returning later to top score with 75 runs from 98 balls for his side, earning a second consecutive Man of the Match award. Bjorn Fortuin took 2-46, with Patrick Kruger, Ngazibini Sigwili and Mbulelo Budaza returning one each.
USSA’s bowling unit did not let what some would have called a below-par score phase them. Kaber was the leading wicket taker with 3-42, while Lizaad Williams, Solomzi Nqweni and Ndumiso Mvelase took two wickets each. Fortuin was the second-highest run scorer with 29 off 46 balls but no one else managed to score higher than Kruger’s nine off 10 deliveries.
South Africa Emerging won their opener against Sri Lanka Emerging by 69 runs on Wednesday, and they face USSA again on Monday. USSA meanwhile will hope to continue their winning ways when they face Sri Lanka Emerging today at Groenkloof.
