Rory Kleinveldt smashed a 13-ball 32 and took a wicket for Northants in the Royal London One Day Cup on Sunday evening.
After almost a six-week absence, the Royal London One Day Cup returned to England’s already packed schedule. There were some notable absentees, including Kent’s Kagiso Rabada, Nottinghamshire’s Imran Tahir and Chris Morris of Surrey, who have all returned to South Africa for the CSA Awards before gearing up for the NZ Test series.
The regular Saffas were involved bar the injured Richard Levi, and to emerge with the most credit was Rory Kleinveldt, who helped Northants to a massive 170-run victory over Keaton Jennings‘ Durham. Kleinveldt hit six fours in the 13 balls he faced to race to 32 in his side’s 355-6. Ray Jennings’ son Keaton, a rising star in England, had a day to forget, bowling seven wicketless overs and scoring eight in the crushing defeat. Kleinveldt conceded a miserly 18 from his six overs, which included a wicket maiden.
Another member of a famous South African family, Riki Wessels, kept up Nottinghamshire’s sensational performance at the top of the order. Johannesburg-born and leading run scorer in the competition Michael Lumb already has three centuries in the tournament from four innings; Kepler’s son Riki now has two, as his 114 handed Notts a 65-run win.
Glamorgan, littered with Mzansi talent, fell 33 runs short of Somerset’s total in Taunton. Pretoria-born Johann Myburgh chipped in with 39 in their 322-7, before Jacques Rudolph (38) and Colin Ingram‘s (32) contributions weren’t enough. Rudolph was one of Roelof van der Merwe‘s three victims on the night.
Ex-Dolphins paceman Matthew Pillans meanwhile got a run for Surrey after battling to break through to the 1st XI in the longer format. It wasn’t the best day out for him as he conceded 41 runs from his five overs, but he did get the wicket of Port Elizabeth-born Dutch international Ryan ten Doeschate, as Surrey won by 66 runs against Essex. It was table-topping Essex’s first defeat of the season.
Another Saffa on the winning side was Graeme van Buuren, who contributed 38 runs in Gloucestershire’s 51-run victory over Sussex.
