Hashim Amla led the way in a record T20 stand with Dwayne Bravo to set up victory for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL.
It was a remarkable turnaround after the Riders had struggled to 20-4, with Brendon McCullum, Colin Munro, Darren Bravo and Umar Akmal back in the pavilion after five overs. Then Bravo strode out and the two put on 150, a T20 record for the fifth wicket, at almost 10 an over.
It presented the Tridents with a target of 170, but with AB de Villiers struggling to make an impact, scratching out 12 from 14, they fell 11 runs short.
Amla fell off the last ball of the innings for 81. His innings came off 54 balls and included four sixes, two of which came off Wayne Parnell‘s final over. That over, the 17th of the innings, went for 19 runs; Amla hit the second ball into the stands down the ground and hooked the third for six more.
Bravo hit four sixes of his own, in an unbeaten 66 not out off 46. The partnership was also the highest for any wicket in the CPL.
David Wiese also came in for some punishment, going for 41 off his four overs.
Amla, though, did not come out to field as he strained his back during his explosive innings.
‘I think I’ve tweaked something in the back, but I think it should be fine,’ he said. ‘Not taking the field was more a precautionary matter because we have a quick turnaround for a match on Saturday’
