South Africa are out of the T20 World Cup after England secured their spot in the play-offs with a 10-run win over Sri Lanka on Saturday.
The Proteas needed England to lose this game and then beat Sri Lanka on Monday to give themselves a chance of qualifying, but it wasn’t meant to be.
England now join West Indies as the semi-finalists out of group two.
Sri Lanka decided to chase the game after winning the toss. England lost Alex Hales in the second over, but Jason Roy smacked 42 off 39 balls and shared a 61-run partnership with Joe Root (25).
Jos Buttler was the main destroyer, hitting an unbeaten 66 from 37 balls to launch England to 171-4 in their 20 overs.
Sri Lanka’s chase got off to a catastrophic start as they slumped to 15-4. The fact that they eventually managed to lose by only 10 runs, was down to a 80-run partnership between Angelo (73 not out from 54 balls) and Chamara Kapugedera (30).
In the end, the asking rate was just too much. Chris Jordan t0ok 4-28 in four overs.
