South African all-rounder Chris Morris has been signed by English county Surrey for the Natwest T20 Blast.
Morris, who was recently sold for $1.044 million at the IPL auction, has been signed as an overseas player and will join them in July as West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo will leave to play in the Caribbean Premier League.
Morris will be available for the final six group matches of the tournament. He is part of South Africa’s World T20 squad and will play for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL before going to England.
He has been in good form for South Africa recently, especially with the bat, after twice helping them win tight matches in both the ODI and T2o series against England.
Cricket South Africa issued Morris a NOC certificate this week which allows him to play in England during their summer.
‘I am delighted to have signed for Surrey to play T20 this year,’ Morris told the Surrey website. ‘Playing county cricket has always been a big ambition of mine and I am delighted to be playing at the Kia Oval. I look forward to joining up with the boys in July and I hope to contribute towards a successful season for the county.’
Surrey’s Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart, said of the signing: ‘Chris is an exciting three dimensional cricketer with bat, ball and in the field and has shown his match winning abilities in the recent series between South Africa and England. He will give us a number of very good options when he joins us in July and everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming him this summer.’
