England will hope to continue the aggressive run-scoring that marked the end of day one when Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow take to the field on Sunday morning.
England will continue on 317-5 with Stokes (74 not out) clearly in the mood to take the attack to South Africa. He and Bairstow has an overnight partnership of 94 and it’s the kind of partnership which can put the Proteas under immense pressure when they eventually come out to bat.
The good news for South Africa is that the new ball is only seven overs old, but that will count for nothing if Hashim Amla doesn’t get his field placings right. They were way too conservative towards the end of day one and the need to limit the scoring is valid, but if Stokes is going to play his shots regardless of how old the ball is you might as well gets some catchers in place because he will give you a chance to get him out.
But if he stays in long enough England could look to score in the region of 500 in fairly quick time before declaring, assuming South Africa don’t bowl them out for less.
Morne Morkel was under bowled on Saturday so it will be interesting to see if Amla increases his workload today.
