AB de Villiers became only the third South African to reach 8 000 Test runs with his unbeaten fifty against England on the third day of the Newlands Test.

De Villiers (172 innings) achieved the feat one innings faster than Graeme Smith, who took 173 innings to get there. Jacques Kallis is the fastest South African in 170 innings.

Hashim Amla (152 innings) became the fifth South African to reach 7 000 Test runs, one innings slower than Kallis (151) and De Villiers (151) but faster than Gary Kirsten (167). Smith did it in 148 innings.
