South Africa claimed their first win at the World Championship of Legends on Tuesday with an epic run chase against Pakistan.
Pakistan posted 210-4 in Northampton thanks to Sharjeel Khan’s 72 off 36 balls. Former Proteas pacemen Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Charl Langeveldt each picked up a wicket as did still-active 45-year-old spinner Imran Tahir.
South Africa, captained by the great Jacques Kallis, lost JP Duminy (nine) early in their run chase but a superb partnership between Jacques Snyman (82* off 47 balls) and Sarel Erwee (105* off 57 balls) saw them reach the target with nine balls remaining.
South Africa lost their first three matches of the tournament in Birmingham – to England by nine wickets, to Australia by 104 runs and to the West Indies by six wickets – and are bottom of the six-team table.
Kallis’ men will play their final league-stage match against India in Northampton on Wednesday.
The top four teams on the log will progress to Friday’s semi-finals in Northampton, with the final in Birmingham on Saturday.
