It is still uncertain whether Dale Steyn will recover in time to play in the third Test against India on 25 November.

Steyn injured his groin midway through the first Test in Mohali and missed out on the following game, which ended in a draw on Wednesday.

‘I’m not 100% sure what the exact prognosis is, but it will be great if he’s ready for the next Test,’ captain Hashim Amla said.

‘It will be great to have the No 1 bowler in the world back in our team.’

Amla said a lack of turn in Bengaluru was his team’s downfall and dismissed suggestions that they struggled against India’s spinners.

‘Sometimes the lack of turn did us,’ he said. ‘You’ve got to be positive in everything you do. If the guys got out playing a positive shot I’m happy because I think they are trying to take the game forward and score runs and that is the name of the game anyway.

‘Opening the batting is probably the most difficult job in cricket. Dean [Elgar] and Stiaan [Van Zyl] I believe are our best openers and they will do a great job for us. The fact that myself and Faf [Du Plessis] in this game didn’t get going, we have only ourselves to blame. No-one else.

‘It will be great for us to get some confidence under our belts. We haven’t had successful batting stints as yet but Nagpur is a different Test and hopefully that is when it starts. Hopefully we can play better cricket in the next Test.’
