Bjorn Fortuin says Keshav Maharaj has set a high standard for the Proteas.

Maharaj is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after rupturing an Achilles tendon during the second Test against the West Indies at the Wanderers on Saturday.

The left-arm spinner consulted a surgeon on Monday and will undergo surgery on Friday.

Fortuin is set to fill in for Maharaj during the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies and possibly at the World Cup in India later this year, too.

“I wouldn’t say my name is set in stone in any way,” Fortuin said on Tuesday. “There’s still a fair bit of cricket that needs to be played, but the spot that has been opened puts the responsibility on me now.

“With Keshav not around, there’s a high standard that needs to be fulfilled. I’ll try to take it day by day and focus on the job at hand.

“Kesh is a massive loss and it’s not that nice to talk about it,” added Fortuin, who has earned three ODI caps for the Proteas. “Never mind his natural ability with the ball, he’s got loads of experience and leadership qualities.

“He will be sorely missed.”
