Coach Shukri Conrad has made four changes to the Proteas XI for the second Test against the West Indies at the Wanderers.
Ryan Rickelton replaces Keegan Petersen in the middle order, Wiaan Mulder comes in for spin bowling all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy at No 7, while spinners Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer replace fast bowlers Anrich Nortje (groin injury) and Marco Jansen.
Rickelton was the notable omission from the team that beat the West Indies by 87 runs in Centurion last week.
The 26-year-old averages 54.87 in first-class cricket and has scored 15 hundreds. In three Domestic 4-Day Series matches this season, he has scored 365 runs at an average of 121.66, including three centuries. In his last knock, for the Lions against the Warriors at the Wanderers, he hit 125 off 112 balls (11 fours, seven sixes).
“Ryan deserves it,” Conrad said after naming the team on Wednesday.
The coach explained that the changes had been made in order to build squad depth.
“When India come to our shores at the end of the year, we want to have a settled squad so that we can be fluid in our decision-making.”
The match will start at 10:00 on Wednesday.
