South Africa’s thrashing of India by 214 runs to win the ODI series was one of their best performances in quite a while.
India haven’t had a hiding like that, especially at home, for some time and will be desperate to put things right in the Test series. This victory sets up the Test series nicely and I think it will be riveting to watch.
Winning the T20 as well as the ODI series is a very good achievement by the Proteas. The confidence is there and they seem to be maturing as they go along. No doubt the experience our players have gained in the IPL has played a big role in their success in the subcontinent.
Kagiso Rabada, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock all stood out during the five one-day games. Rabada is fast becoming a very important player for the team and has thoroughly cemented his place in the 50-over side.
De Kock is also a vital guy and batted really well for his two hundreds in the series. He also did a good job behind the stumps and I am impressed by the way he has responded after being dropped for the New Zealand series in August.
Faf had a very good series with three fifties and a hundred and is clearly gaining in confidence in that No 3 role. I have also noticed that he is scoring quicker than he did a year ago, which is a good sign going forward.
Dale Steyn is another player who seems to have rediscovered his passion for the game. He gradually got better with every match, bowling quicker and with more aggression than he has done in a while. He seems more motivated than he has been for quite some time.
Hashim Amla and David Miller were the only disappointments. Miller wasn’t helped by being moved up and down the order, but Amla’s form isn’t a concern ahead of the Test series. He has some time now to get things right and will also have a tour match to focus on ahead of the first Test.
I think India’s bowling attack in this series was pretty average, especially after they lost R Ashwin. His injury was a big blow to them and he seemed like one of the few bowlers in the world who could contain AB. He makes a massive difference to their attack and they will be desperate to have him back for the Test series.
