All six SA20 teams have made their wild-card picks for the inaugural tournament, which starts on 10 January.
The teams were given until 31 December to sign a South African or overseas player. Four of them opted for a South African player.
MI Cape Town broke the trend by signing England fast bowler Jofra Archer, with the 2019 World Cup-winning star set to debut in the league opener against the Paarl Royals at Newlands, while Durban’s Super Giants have recruited Sri Lankan mystery spinner Akila Dananjaya.
The local talent is headlined by Proteas all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, who will join the Paarl Royals at Boland Park. Phehlukwayo has played four Test matches, 74 ODIs and 38 T20Is. His bowling skill-set includes a well-disguised slower ball that is tailor-made for the conditions in Paarl.
The Joburg Super Kings have also opted for an experienced campaigner by bringing former Proteas spinner Aaron Phangiso back to the Wanderers. Phangiso played 21 ODIs and 16 T20Is, and remains one of the most economical spinners in the shortest format of the game with an economy of 7.77.
There has been a heavy focus on spin, with the Pretoria Capitals adding Senuran Muthusamy to their squad. Muthusamy, who is also a useful lower-order batsman, played has two Tests for South Africa.
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape have continued their investment in young talent with the acquisition of the talented Jordan Hermann. The 21-year-old has been in prolific form this season and is well-acquainted with the St George’s Park pitch.
