Australia beat South Africa in dramatic fashion by one run as they squared the eight-match series 4-4 in the final ODI in Bloemfontein in 1994.

Australia claimed an improbable victory after South Africa seemingly had the match won at 158-3, needing 46 from the last nine overs. The final over was bowled by Damien Fleming – in his first match of the tour – with six runs needed, and he held his nerve; Dave Richardson was run out off the last ball trying to level the scores for a tie.

Ian Healy’s unbeaten 41 off 31 balls for Australia had given them a total (203-6) that proved just enough.

In reply, Andrew Hudson made the only half-century of the match, and his 84 deserved to win it for South Africa. But once he was caught by Allan Border off Paul Reiffel, the rot set in.

Border, in his farewell international, astutely saved three Warne overs for the impatient Adrian Kuiper, who was first tied down and then caught, by Mark Waugh. Wickets fell at regular intervals afterwards before Richardson was run out as South Africa finished on 202 in 50 overs.
