All-rounder Albie Morkel has been called up to replace the injured David Wiese for South Africa’s three-match T20 International series against India starting in Dharamshala next week Friday.
Wiese fractured his finger while playing for the Unlimited Titans in a pre-season warm-up match. Furthermore, Rilee Rossouw has been ruled out of the One-Day International (ODI) series following recommendations from Cricket South Africa’s medical committee and will be replaced by Khaya Zondo in the squad.
Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee, gave clarity on the injuries at the squad’s departure press conference held at OR Tambo International airport on Saturday afternoon.
‘Unfortunately David Wiese fractured his right hand last week Sunday while taking a return catch off his own bowling,’ he said.
‘The bone needed surgery and he went into theatre this morning, he will be out of cricket action for at least six weeks. With regards to Rilee Rossouw, the last time we met we spoke about the stress fracture in his left foot which required about eight to 12 weeks of recovery time.
‘Cricket South Africa’s medical committee, after having assessed him, decided that it is still too early for him to be pushed at this stage. The plan is to get him to be ready for action only at the end of October so he will miss the T20 and ODI leg of the series against India.’
