Scott Boland has been added to Australia’s squad ahead of the Boxing Day Test against England in Melbourne.
While Pat Cummins will return to the team after a Covid-19 close contact ruled him out of the Adelaide Test, there remains doubt over Josh Hazlewood, who injured a bowling muscle during the first Test in Brisbane.
Boland, who has played ODI and T20I cricket for Australia, now has a chance of making his Test debut at his home ground, the MCG, on Sunday.
“Boland has been training with the team in Adelaide and joins the squad while the medical team assesses the fast bowling group following the second Test victory,” Cricket Australia said.
The 32-year-old recently took two wickets for Australia A against the England Lions in the tour match in Brisbane.
In this season’s Sheffield Shield, he has taken 15 wickets in two matches for Victoria at an average of 10.
Mitchell Starc, Michael Neser and Jhye Richardson are the other fast bowlers in the Australian squad.
