The Proteas went into their T20 World Cup match against the West Indies on Tuesday without wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock.
Reeza Hendricks replaces De Kock, who misses out due to “personal reasons”.
“It’s been a bit challenging to know what a good score is, so we want to have a look,” Bavuma said on his team’s decision to bowl. “He [De Kock] has made himself unavailable for personal reasons.”
De Kock’s decision followed a directive from the CSA board that Proteas players will be required to adopt a consistent and united stance against racism by ‘taking the knee’ before the start of their remaining T20 World Cup matches.
TV commentator Pommie Mbangwa said this was the reason for De Kock’s absence.
